Bhurungamari (Bengali: ভুরুঙ্গামারি) is the northern most Upazila of Kurigram District in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh.

Geography

Bhurungamari is located at 26.1250°N 89.6833°E / 26.1250; 89.6833. It has 33984 households and total area 236 km².

Demographics

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Bhurungamari has a population of 176822. Males constitute 50.38% of the population, and females 49.62%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 88435. Bhurungamari has an average literacy rate of 19.5% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.

Administration

Bhurungamari has 10 Unions/Wards, 71 Mauzas/Mahallas, and 124 villages.

Cultural significance

It is one of the northernmost places of Bangladesh. The word Bhurungamari itself is often used to mean remote place. For example, a man may say "Bhurungamarite bojropat hole amar ki?" to mean matters regarding others are not important for him.
