Early life and education

Bhismshankar was born in Tanda, Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh. His highest attained education is intermediate. By profession, he is a farmer.

Political career

Bhishma Shanker started his political career as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party , on whose ticket he contested the Lok Sabha elections from Balrampur in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. This seat held special significance for the BJP as this was the first constituency from where Atal Bihari Vajpayee contested his first election. He was defeated by Rizwan Zahir of the Samajwadi party by a margin of 6000 votes, a rather trivial number by Indian electoral standards. He then contested the 2004 General Election from Khalilabad(now Sant Kabir Nagar) unsuccessfully against the incumbent Bhal Chandra. Bhishma Shanker was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in a by-election in which he trounced Bhal Chandra by a heavy margin of 70,000 votes from Sant Kabir Nagar constituency ,when it came into existence in 2008 as a part of the implementation of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India. He has been elected two straight terms from the constituency. In 2009 , he defeated Sharad Tripathi of the BJP by a margin of 30,000 votes. A proactive parliamentarian,he was a member of several standing committees including External Affairs and Public Undertakings.

Bhishma Shanker and his Family are regarded as perhaps the most prominent face of Brahmins and Brahmin related politics in Uttar Pradesh. Their stewardship of the Brahmins of Poorvanchal has often placed them at odds with the Gorakhnath Temple and the local Member of Parliament and current chief minister of Uttar Pradesh,Adityanath , whom people regard as a prominent Thakur leader.
