Bhabatosh Banerjee, Ph.D., is Professor, Department of Commerce and Dean Faculty of the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management of the University of Calcutta. He has over 35 years of teaching experience at the postgraduate level. Earlier (1984–85), he served as Director of Research, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, and as a Visiting Professor (1995–97), School of Accountancy, Rutgers University, New Brunswick(USA)

He has been President, Indian Accounting Association and Vice President, International Association for Accounting Education and Research. He is the editor of Indian Accounting Review, and is the author of several books on finance and accounting, some of which have gone into multiple editions.

Career at Calcutta University

Dr. Bhabatosh Banerjee joined University of Calcutta on 1 February 1969, as Lecturer in Commerce at the age of 23 years. He became Reader and Professor in the Department in 1979 and 1985 respectively. Professor Banerjee served as Head of the Department during 1989-1991, and Dean of Commerce, Social Welfare and Business Management twice during 1987-1989 and 2003-2005 respectively. He was member of the Ph. D. Committee in Commerce for about 24 years and served as its Convener for two terms since 1988. Dr. Banerjee took initiative in troducing in 2005 MBA (Finance), a self-financing course in the Department and served as its Co-ordinator for two years. It is now one of the most successful self-financing courses in the University. Dr. Banerjee worked as Co-ordinator of DSA in Commerce in all of its three phases and successfully gave leadership to obtain Centre of Advance Study (Phase I) in 2010 and also served as its Co-ordinator for one year till his retirement on 31 January 2011. Dr. Banerjee believes in team work and got many of his colleagues with him for building up an academically leading department in the country. The successful completion of all the three phases of DSA in Commerce in time and making the Department first of its kind to have received recognition for CAS (I) from the UGC is a clear testimony of his successful academic leadership in this context. For more than a decade, the UGC utilized his expertise by including him one of the members of various expert committees for evaluation of major research projects, DSA and DRS programmes and also for evaluation of five universities under “Potential for Excellence” scheme.

Between 1982 and 2012, Dr. Banerjee supervised 19 Ph.Ds (four under Management Department and 15 under Commerce Department). Many of those dissertations were published (including two by LAMBERT Academic Publishing of Germany) for benefits of research scholars and academics. He published 77 articles till now (including 11 abroad). Many of his research scholars and M.Com. and MBA students have been occupying exalted positions in academic institutions and public and private enterprises. He was Principal Investigator of several research projects funded by the University of Calcutta and the University Grants Commission and got them published. Two of them, viz. Accounting Education in India, published by Calcutta University (December 1994), Regulation of Corporate Accounting and Reporting in India (published by The World Press in 2002) were reviewed favourably in the U.S.A. in Issues in Accounting Education (Spring, 1996) and International Journal of Accounting (No. 2, 2003) respectively. Accounting Education in India is considered to be one of his pioneering research works. His third major research project, funded by the UGC, on Accounting for Corporate Environmental Management, was published by Prentice Hall of India in 2009. As Co-ordinator of DSA, he edited (jointly with others) and co-authored four research publications - Corporate Financial Reporting (2001), Economic Environment and Human Resource Management (2002), International Finance and Accounting (2006), Corporate Social Responsibility (2008), all published by the University for dissemination of knowledge.

As an individual, Dr. Banerjee is widely acknowledged as a reputed author through his numerous publications, notable among them being Cost Accounting (first published in 1972), Financial Policy and Management Accounting (first published in 1984) both by the World Press Pvt. Ltd. These two text books for post-graduate level are now published by Prentice Hall (13th and 8th Ed. respectively).

Educational Activities outside India

Dr. Banerjee also occupied several important positions in India and abroad. He worked as Director of Research, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, for an about a year during 1984-85. He served as President of the Indian Accounting Association (1990–91), one of the Vice-Presidents of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER; USA: 1993-1997) and Member, Standards Advisory Council (IAAER) of IASB (UK: 2010-2011). Dr. Banerjee was in the Council of the American Accounting Association as International Council member for two years (2009-2011). He also worked as Visiting Professor of Accounting in The State University of Rutgers, New Brunswick, and New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA, during 1995-97.
