History

The Bexley Library was founded in 1924 in the Bexley High School. The first director of the library after the library transitioned to its own location was Sarah Bilby in 1934. Throughout the 20th century the library continued to grow, with additions to the side and back of the building. Since 2009 the library has added a homework help center for children and teens, free wireless internet for patrons, and a computer center for patrons. The library has joined the Central Library Consortium to partner with 13 other local libraries and now offers patrons access to over 4.7 million resources.

Services

The Bexley Public Library offers services including rentable computers, laptops, wireless internet, fundraisers, a drive-up book return, public meeting spaces, copiers and printers, library cards, and digital streaming services.

Programs

The Bexley Public Library offers events and programs each month including Homework Resource Zone, Educator Services, Storytimes, and volunteer options for teens.

Homework Resource Zone is a place for kids and teens to do their homework. It is currently led by Bryan Westland and certified HZ volunteers from the Bexley community, as well as Capital University students. Children are provided free school supplies and laptops that they may use to do homework. The volunteers are readily available to help the children and teens with their homework or study habits. The Homework Zone is open Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. If students are still working on schoolwork after the Homework Zone has closed, students may stay and keep working in the Teens and Kids section on the bottom floor of the library. Parents may not leave children under the age of 13 alone once homework zone has ended. The summer of 2015 the Bexley Public Library counted over 2,000 volunteer hours, doubling its volunteer hours from 2014.

Educator Resources are services and materials that are available for teachers. This includes class visits to the library, librarian visits to classrooms, Educator Cards, and access to teacher collections.

Storytime at Bexley Public Library offers different storytime events for all ages. There is a Preschool Storytime, Baby Storytime, Rhyme Time, and Pajama Storytime, as well as book signings and readings for teens and adults. The storytimes may include dancing, singing, and play in order to solidify learning and fun for families.
