Bewar (pronounced Hindi:बेवर, Urdu:بیور) is a town and a nagar panchayat (urban municipality) in Mainpuri district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Bewar is a block headquarters consisting of 76 gram panchayats.

Geography

Bewar is located at 25.75°N 79.93°E / 25.75; 79.93, 280 km from Delhi the national capital. It has an average elevation of 127 metres (416 feet) . It is surrounded by Lower Ganges Canal on three sides and by the river Kaali from one side. Five major cities are located at an equal distance of about 150 km (Agra, Kanpur, Aligarh, Bareilly, Gwalior) from Bewar .Bewar is connected with two national highways NH 91 and NH92 & one state highway SH 29. It has a government owned bus terminal which acts as a major hub for nearby towns and villages.

Demographic view

As of 2011 India census, Bewar had a population of 23729. Males constituted 12456 of the population and females 11273. Bewar has an average literacy rate of 81.2, surpassing the national average of 74.04%, with 86.54% of the males and 76.21% of females literate. 14.08% of the population is under six years of age.

Historical View

It is believed that the city of Bewar was established by Vidura of the Mahabharata. The town later contributed to India's fight for independence. The name Bewar originated during the Mutiny of 1857, the English placed warning banners on all the entrances of the town saying "BEWARE". Gradually, with time, the letter "E" was omitted and the town became known as "BEWAR".

Every year, a 16 days special exhibition, Shaheed Mela, takes place. The exhibition was founded by Shri Jagdish Narayan Tripathi who contributed greatly in the development of this town. He also founded Shaheed Smarak and Shaheed Mandir at the place where Shaheed Krishna Kumar (aged 14 yrs.), Shaheed Jamuna Prasad Tripathi (aged 40 yrs.) and 'Shaheed Sita Ram Gupta (aged 42 yrs.), lost their lives while fighting the British on August 15, 1942.
