Bethune College is the first women's college in Asia. It was founded as a school in 1849 by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune, and in 1879 developed into the first women's college in India, after whom it is named as Bethune College. It is located in Kolkata, and is affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

Motto

The motto of the College "Vidya Vindatey Amritam" means 'knowledge provides immortal bliss.'

The three glowing lamps - centrally for 'knowledge' side by side 'humanity' and "transparency", and the wheel for 'dynamism through exercise' constitute the emblem.
