As of 2015 Barton has written three books. As well as illustrating her own stories, she has illustrated for other authors. Her most recent book, I'm Trying to Love Spiders, has received a number of positive reviews. It was winner of the 2016 Children's Choice Book Award for 3-4th Grade Book of The Year.
