Early life and education

Andre Bernard Zuel was born on 21 January 1965 in Rose-Hill, Mauritius. His father, Andre Cyril Zuel (born 4 November 1939), was from Curepipe and his mother, Marie Irelande (born 11 August 1938) was from Quatre Bornes. His younger sister, Marie Roxane, was born on 9 July 1967. His family relocated to Australia by the early 1970s and settled in Sydney.

In the podcast Penmanship, he told how he wrote his first review aged 20 of REM's Fables of the Reconstruction, which he submitted to street press. He was surprised to find it was published.

He worked for street press before he got a job as a general news reporter at the Penrith Press. He worked there for a few years before he applied for a Sydney Morning Herald position and got it.
