Berachampa Deulia Uchcha Vidyalaya (BDUV) is an upper secondary school at Berachampa in the Barasat Sadar subdivision. One of the older schools in the area, it has been run by the government since 2 January 1948. Currently, more than 2,300 students are attending the school. Formerly a boys' school in status, after the Madhyamik standard, it was declared as a co-educational school.

Contents

History

The school was originally named the Deulia M.E. School and then renamed the Sir Stanly Jackson Uttam Vidyamandir School. The government would later take over the school give it its current name. The school is situated on Chandraketugarh, an historic location in West Bengal.

Campus

The school has two floors. The ground floor contains the headmaster's office, staff room, computer room, and main hall in the front wing of the building. The right wing holds a chemistry laboratory, classrooms, and restrooms. The left wing of the building contains a common room and further classrooms. The second floor houses more classrooms in the front and right wings and a grand hall in the left wing. A library and physics and biology laboratories are found at the rear of the building on the second floor.

The campus contains a small field enclosed by three walls from the building with one side left open for entry.

Transportation

The school is situated beside Haroa Road and is well-accessed by railway and bus routes. Buses from Kolkata to Baduria, Basirhat, Najat, Hasnabad, etc., pass through Berachampa. The nearest rail station is on Harua Road, a part of the Sealdah–Hasnabad division of the Eastern Railway.

Class results for 2009

In 2009, the highest score on the Madhyamik test was 743, and the high for the Higher Secondary Exam was 442. 100% of candidates passed the former standard, and 98% passed the latter (Science, 100%; Commerce, 100%; and Arts, 94%).

Cultural activities

Many cultural programs occur at the school, such as Independence Day and Republican Day celebrations and the holidays Rabindra Jayanti and Nazrul Jayanti, etc. The Saraswati Puja is also an annual ceremony. In the autumn, there is a cultural ceremony, which includes intra-institution award distribution.

There is also a school magazine, titled Bihan, that is published annually.

Games and sports

Cricket, football, and volleyball are played by the students. BDUV plays in an inter-school cricket and football tournament. Inter-class football tournaments also occur every August. Every February, an annual sports competition is also held.
