Born in Grove City, Ohio, Swanson is a product of the Columbus Crew SC academy and a graduate of Grove City High School. Having first played for Crew SC at the under-9 level, Swanson began practicing with the senior team on September 22, 2014. It was announced on October 15, 2014 that Swanson would sign a Homegrown Player contract with Crew SC and later be formally added to the roster on January 1, 2015.

On March 17, 2016, Swanson was loaned to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, a United Soccer League affiliate club of Columbus Crew SC. He made his Riverhounds debut on April 17, 2016 in a game against Toronto FC II. Swanson would later be recalled by Crew SC, coming on as a substitute and making his MLS debut June 1, 2016 in a 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Union. He returned to Pittsburgh and made two more appearances as a substitute, before undergoing shoulder surgery in late July, ruling him out for the season.
