Early life

Ben was born in St. Louis Missouri where he displayed an early knack for filmmaking. He illustrated a comic-strip for the local college newspaper and made several animated super 8 films, one of which was broadcast on the local television station. This led Ben to attend Calarts, where he received a full academic scholarship from Walt Disney Animation Studios. While at Calarts, his student short film, Man’s Best Friend, was awarded the prestigious Walter Lantz student honorary Academy Award. It premiered worldwide in heavy rotation on MTV's Cartoon Sushi network show and won many top awards in the American and international film circuit. This film also premiered in theaters world-wide in Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation.

Career

He started his career as the very first story intern at Dreamworks Animation where he focused on the film The Prince of Egypt. He was then recruited by Walt Disney Animation Studios where he worked for over a decade in the story department, as a storyboard artist, on the films Dinosaur, The Emperor’s New Groove, Home on the Range and Piglet's Big Movie. He served as Head of Story on Bambi II and made his directorial debut with Brother Bear 2. He then worked for various studios including Tyler Perry Studios, Imagi, and Warner Brothers where he worked on the 3D live-action/computer-animated family comedy Yogi Bear. He storyboarded a Daytime Emmy-Award winning for Outstanding Children's Programing television episode of the Rugrats. He worked at the indie studio Focus Features where he was Head of Story on 9, produced by Tim Burton, and he directed a small budget 3D CGI animated indie feature film, Alpha and Omega, which became the highest-grossing animated film franchise for Lionsgate Family Entertainment.
