Belthangady Taluk (Beltangadi Taluka) is a rural taluka of the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, India. The headquarters is the town of Belthangady. Of the five taluks in Dakshina Kannada, it is the largest in area and the second smallest in population. There are two towns, Belthangady and Kuvettu, and forty-three panchayat villages in Belthangady Taluk. There are thirty-six other inhabited, non-panchayat, villages. The Karnataka Assembly constituency is Belthangady.

Geography

Belthangady taluk is mostly covered by forests. The hills of the Western ghats provide scenic beauty, especially during the monsoon season that usually lasts from the month of June to September. The taluka has an average elevation of 685 metres (2247 feet). It covers an area of 1,375 square kilometres (530.9 sq mi).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Belthangady Taluk had a population of 246,494, with 121,288 males (49.2%) and 125,206 females (50.8%). The talulka was 02.9% urban and 97.1% rural.

Belthangady taluk has got its own fire station located in the town of Belthangady.

    Belthangady is famous for educational institutions. Ujire, a small village, is the center of education. Including SDM group of institutions, everal institutions in the area have been imparting quality education in the locality. SDM College Ujire is ranked 'A' by NAAC (National Accreditation and Assessment Council), which is the only college in India located in a village to be ranked 'A'by NAAC. Students from all over India aspire to study in these institutions every year. SDM Naturopathy college has a unique credit of being the only institution in India that offers post graduation in Naturopathy and Yogic Science.
