BattleTanks II is a combination action/strategy tank combat game created by John Judnich for the Caiman Easter 2006 Game Programming competition, where it won 1st prize.

"In BattleTanks II, you can battle against up to 4 other teams of computer-controlled tanks, in one of 5 unique battlefields. BattleTanks II features three tank types to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

There are many ways to win a war in BattleTanks II. If you like being the commander of your army, you can sit back away from the action, directing your army's actions strategically. However, if you prefer action, there's nothing stopping you from helping your tanks out and join the fight. You can make sneak attacks, massive assaults, try weakening your enemy with artillery, and much more."

Factions and Tanks

Each of the game's teams represents the United States, Germany, Russia, and Japan. All 4 teams use 3 types of tanks:

  • Light Tank: Resembling the M4 Sherman, the light tank is the fastest tank in the game, but the weakest. However, large numbers of them can be quite devastating for medium and heavy tanks. It is extremely vulnerable, especially to heavy tanks that could destroy most tanks in one shot.
  • Medium Tank: Resembling the M10 Wolverine, the medium tank is slower and stronger than the light tank, but faster and weaker than the heavy tank.
  • Heavy Tank: Resembling the M1 Abrams, the heavy tank is the strongest tank in the game, and therefore, the slowest. Heavy tanks can destroy most tanks in one shot, but is vulnerable when engaging large numbers of light and medium tanks.

    At the time of this writing, the game has over 120,000 downloads on the original (Caiman) website alone, and continues to be downloaded roughly 500 - 800 times per week.

    Reception

    The game received very good ratings from various reviews and the user rating at download.com averages 4 out of 5 stars.

    Mods

    A lot of fans made a lot of modifications to the game like Apollon who made Battle Tanks II Return Appocalypse or Bumblebee17 who made Battle Tanks World War II.They were inspired by John Judnich that made a game at home,so they decided to do the same.Today there are a lot of mods and expansions of the game that have 300-500 downloads per week.
