The National Identity Card (Bengali: জাতীয় পরিচয়পত্র) or NID-card is a compulsory document issued to every Bangladeshi citizen upon becoming 18 years of age.

History

Biometric identification has existed in Bangladesh since 2008. All Bangladeshis who are 18 years of age or older are included in a central Biometric Database, which is used by the Bangladesh Election Commission to oversee the electoral procedure in Bangladesh. A smart card involves a type of integrated circuit card (ICC) also known as a "chip card." This involves any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits that can be loaded with data.

The Bangladesh Election Commission, is planning to include the following facilities in one BD smart card: citizens ‘right and benefits’:

  2. Driving License
  3. Passport
  4. Property Land buying and Selling
  5. Open Bangladeshi Bank accounts
  6. Bank loans support
  7. Government bhata or lift
  8. Support received
  9. BIN facility
  10. Share-BO account maintainers
  11. Business Trade License
  12. Vehicle registration
  13. Insurance schemes
  14. Marriage registration
  15. E-passports
  16. E-Governance
  17. Gas and Electricity connections
  18. Mobile connect
  19. Health cards
  20. E-Cash
  21. Bank transactions
  22. Student’s admission facilities

National Identity Wing (NIDW), under the Bangladesh Election Commission, introduced the Smart National Identity Card in October 2016. To maintain security of smartcards, 25 international certifications and standards have been ensured. The card holders currently receive 22 types of services, including banking, TIN, driving license and passport.

Voter list is an ongoing process under election commission. Bangladeshi citizen who have frequently lived in an area and are 18 or above before 1 January 2017, but not yet registered as a voter, may register as a voter. At the time of enrollment they need some papers for Form-2 like

  • SSC or equivalent certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport/ Driving license / TIN certificate
  • Utility bill copy/ House rent receipt/ Holding tax receipt (as a proof of address)
  • Citizenship certificate ( as applicable)
  • Father, Mother, Husband/ Wife’s NID bd photo copy.
