This was Bangladesh's second tour to Pakistan, with the first occurring in 2001–02, when the teams played one test.
Prior to this series, Bangladesh toured Australia in July and August 2003, where they lost the ODI series 3 - 0 and the Test match series 2 - 0. Pakistan toured England in June 2003, losing the ODI series (Natwest Challenge) 2 - 1.
This series was the first international Test cricket series to be held in Pakistan after a 15-month absence due to security concerns. The Pakistan squad also included 7 players without any previous Test cricket experience, after many senior players (such as Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Saeed Anwar) retired.
The series ended in whitewash, with Pakistan winning the test series 3 - 0 and the ODI series 5 - 0. This was Pakistan's first home test series win since defeating the West Indies in 1997–98. Bagladeshi player Alok Kapali became the first Bangladeshi cricketer and the 31st cricketer overall to take a test hat-trick. Pakistan captain, Rashid Latif, was banned for 5 One Day Internationals after the test series for claiming a dropped catch.
First Test: Pakistan v Bangladesh (20–24 August 2003)
Yasir Hameed became the second batsmen in Test cricket (after Lawrence Rowe) to score two centuries on debut, and the fourth Pakistani to score two centuries in one Test match.
Second Test: Pakistan v Bangladesh (27–31 August 2003)
On the third day of the match Alok Kapali became the first Bangladeshi cricketer and the 31st cricketer overall to take a test hat-trick in the first innings of the match. He took the wickets of Shabbir Ahmed, Danish Kaneria, and Umar Gul. This was Bangladesh's first first-innings lead in 22 Test matches. Man of the match, Shoaib Akhtar, took his first 10 wicket hall in this match.
Third Test: Pakistan v Bangladesh (3–7 September 2003)
Pakistan required 4 runs of the last over on the fourth day of the match, when Inzamam ul Haq hit a boundary on the last ball to win the Test match for the home team. This was the 10th one-wicket victory in Test match history. Pakistan captain Rashid Latif was banned for five One Day Internationals after being found guilty of the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct. Bangladesh lodged a protest with the match referee Mike Procter that he had knowingly claimed a dropped catch. Inzamam ul Haq was appointed the captain for the one-day series, while Kamran Akmal was to take over wicket keep duties.
First ODI: Pakistan v Bangladesh (9 September 2003)
Junaid Zia (Pakistan) and Rajin Saleh (Bangladesh) made their ODI debuts in this match. Inzamam ul Haq captained the Pakistan team due to Rashid Latif's ban; Kamran Akmal kept wickets in his absence.
Second ODI: Pakistan v Bangladesh (12 September 2003)
Yousuf Youhana scored his 9th ODI century in this match, his second against Bangladesh.
Third ODI: Pakistan v Bangladesh (15 September 2003)
Pakistan clinched the ODI series after beating Bangladesh in the third match, leading the series 3 - 0. Bangladesh were given a reduced target of 244 from 44 overs after 6 overs were lost because of technical issues with the floodlights. Umar Gul took his best bowling figures of 5/17.
Fourth ODI: Pakistan v Bangladesh (18 September 2003)
In a tense finale, Pakistan required 7 runs of the last over to win. Yousuf Youhana scored 5 runs off the first three deliveries off Mashrafe Mortaza before Abdul Razzaq took a single to tie the scores. Youhana then hit a four to win the match with 1 ball remaining.
Fifth ODI: Pakistan v Bangladesh (21 September 2003)
Pakistan won the last match of the series comfortably by 58 runs, completing a double whitewash over Bangladesh. The won the ODI series 5 - 0 and the test series 3 - 0. Yousuf Youhana entered the top 10 (at 7th place) of the PwC ODI batting ratings for the first time, while Alok Kapali became the first Bangladeshi to enter the top 50 of the ratings.
