Balurghat subdivision

Balurghat subdivision is a subdivision of the South Dinajpur district in the state of West Bengal, India. It consists of Balurghat municipality and four community development blocs: Hili, Balurghat, Kumarganj and Tapan. The four blocks contain 35 gram panchayats. The subdivision has its headquarters at Balurghat.

Area

Apart from the Balurghat municipality, the subdivision contains rural areas of 35 gram panchayats under four community development blocs: Hili, Balurghat, Kumarganj and Tapan. There is no urban area under these four blocks, except two urban outgrowths—Chak Bhrigu and Baidynathpara in Balurghat block.

Hili block

Rural area under Hili block consists of five gram panchayats, viz. Binshira, Hili, Panjul, Dhalpara and Jamalpur. Hili police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Hili.

Balurghat block

Rural area under Balurghat block consists of 11 gram panchayats, viz. Amritakhand, Chakvrigu, Gopalbati, Patiram, Bolla, Chingishpur, Jalghar, Vatpara, Boaldar, Danga and Najirpur. Chak Bhrigu and Baidynathpara were two urban outgrowths noted in census 2001. Balurghat police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Beltola Park.

Kumarganj block

Rural area under Kumarganj block consists of eight gram panchayats, viz. Batun, Deor, Mohana, Safanagar, Bhour, Jakirpur, Ramkrishnapur and Samjia. Kumarganj police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Gopalgunj.

Tapan block

Rural area under Tapan block consists of 11 gram panchayats, viz. Ajmatpur, Gophanagar, Hazratpur, Rampara Chenchra, Autina, Gurail, Malancha, Tapanchandipur, Dwipkhanda, Harsura and Ramchandrapur. Tapan police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is in Tapan.

Legislative segments

As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the delimitation of constituencies in the West Bengal, the Kumarganj block will be part of the Kumarganj assembly constituency of West Bengal. The Balurghat municipality, the Hilli block, and the gram panchayats of Amritakhand, Vatpara and Chingishpur under the Balurghat block will together constitute the Balurghat assembly constituency. The other eight gram panchayats under the Balurghat block, viz. Chakvrigu, Gopalbati, Patiram, Bolla, Jalghar, Boaldar, Danga and Najirpur will form the Tapan assembly constituency along with the gram panchayats of Dwipkhanda, Gophanagar, Harsura, Malancha and Tapanchandipur under the Tapan block. The other six gram panchayats under the Tapan block, viz. Ajmatpur, Hazratpur, Rampara Chenchra, Autina, Gurail and Ramchandrapur, will be part of the Gangarampur assembly constituency. The Gangarampur constituency will be reserved for Scheduled castes (SC) candidates, whereas the Tapan constituency will be reserved for Scheduled tribes (ST). All the four constituencies will be part of the Balurghat (Lok Sabha constituency).
