Bakhrabad Gas Adarsha Bidhalaya (Bengali: বাখরাবাদ গ্যাস আদর্শ বিদ্যালয়) is a co-educational Bangladeshi high school (Grade I-XI) in Comilla about a half kilometre north from Comilla Medical College.

Contents

It was established in 1995. Admissions are based on an entrance test and a viva-voce (oral examination). The school provides education in Bengali and English medium under the national curriculum. Students are admitted into the institution in years 1, 6, and 9. The school has 1200 students and employs 30 teaching staff and other staff.

History

BGAB was set up in Comilla in 1995 under the control and management of the Ministry of Education.

The construction of the main academic building was completed in 1995. Due to an acute shortage of infrastructure, another development project for construction of a new building was taken up in 1995 which was completed in two phases.

The school commenced with only one shift (morning).

Campus

The BGAB campus has an area of 3 acres (12,000 m2), consisting of two inter-connected buildings, a 2.5 acres (10,000 m2) sports ground and a pair of basketball courts. The first building and the second building are five stories and eight stories high respectively.

The first five floors, excluding the ground floor of both inter-connected buildings are used for academic purposes. The central hall, gymnasium, teachers' lounge, administrative offices are in the ground floor. The library, principal's office, biology lab, video lab, computer lab 1 are located in the first floor. The second floor has physics lab, internet lab, computer labs 2 and 3, and classrooms. The third floor consists of classrooms only. Chemistry lab and other classrooms are in the fourth floor.

The fifth floor of the second building is used as living quarters for the principal and other staff. The dormitory for female students is located on this floor. Dormitories for resident male students are on the sixth and seventh floors.

Library

The school has an air-conditioned library with 15,000 volumes. In addition to the material for studies, there is a collection of fiction, non-fiction and periodicals. The library is open during and after academic hours and remains open up to 5:30 p.m. (summer) and 4:30 p.m. (winter).

Administration

The school is under the control of an autonomous board of governors headed by the secretary, Ministry of Education. The secretary of the school is Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited. The chief of the administration of college is the headmaster while there is vice master in each of the shifts (morning shifts). The headmaster is Md. Sofiqur Rahman.

Admission

Admission to BGAB is competitive. Applicants have to pass written and oral tests to qualify. Admission tests for grades 1 and 9 are generally held in December and the academic sessions begin in January. Students securing less than GPA 5 on the scale of 5 in the SSC examinations were not eligible to apply for admission in the eleventh grade.

Curriculum

Bakhrabad Gas Adarsha Bidhalaya follows the national curriculum in Bengali and English medium. This curriculum includes lower secondary, secondary and higher secondary school academic subjects. Computer education is compulsory for grades 6-8 and optional for later grades. Students of grades 6 and 7 can take music, guitar lessons.

Students of secondary (9 and 10) and higher secondary (11 and 12) classes elect to one of three major groups: Arts/Humanities, Business Studies and Science.

Students of grades 10 and 12 are prepared for their SSC and HSC examinations respectively. Students of grade 8 are also prepared for their Junior School Certificate (JSC) (public exam for eighth graders).

Uniforms

All students wear uniforms.

Boys: white shirt and navy blue trousers (Bangla medium, morning shift); white shirt and bottle green trousers (English medium, morning shift); white shirt and brown trousers (Bangla medium, day shift).

Girls: navy blue frock, white pajama and white orna (Bangla medium); bottle green frock, white pajama and white orna (English medium, morning shift); brown frock, white pajama and white orna (Bangla medium, day shift).

Epaulettes are compulsory for all students of BGAB. Students of grade 6 start their academic career in BGAB with single golden stripe and end their grade 10 with five golden stripes in their red epaulettes while eleventh graders start with a golden stripe and end grade 12 with two golden stripes in their green epaulettes. Epaulettes marked with stars and stripes are provided to the school captain (Head Boy or Girl equivalent), prefects and other appointment holders.

Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities

There are 26 clubs and societies. Special emphasis is given to literary and cultural activities. A yearly cultural week is observed, with Hamd, Nat, Quirat, debate, recitation, music, drama, story telling, and caricature.

Other clubs include stamp collection, drawing and painting, photography, gardening, pottery, band and junior cadet crops. A colorful wall paper reflecting the thoughts and ideas of the students is brought out each term.

The school organizes an annual function on 21 February to observe the International Mother Language Day. It holds programs on the occasion of Pohela Boishakh, Independence Day, and Victory Day.

Top students participate in mathematics, physics, and astronomy Olympiads.

    BGAB has outdoor and indoor games facilities. Inter-class football, basketball, cricket, handball and other competitions are held.

    BGAB has indoor games facilities including table tennis, carom, chess and word making. Boards needed for these indoor-games are placed in the common room and hallways. BGAB has a vast football field with two goalposts. There is a basketball ground, two courts are available for girls and boys. The college has a gymnasium, with exercise equipment, on the ground floor of the main academic building.

    Foreign languages

    There is an emphasis is on English. The authority has appointed overseas English teachers as well as local teachers specialized in English. Classes on spoken English and phonetics have been arranged. Students are guided to sit for TOEFL, IELTS and SAT examinations.

    Internet lab

    BGAB provides internet connectivity to its students. The internet lab has 15 computers with broadband internet connection. Students can browse the internet during breaks and after academic hours.

    School magazine

    BGAB publishes an annual magazine containing poems, articles, stories, science fiction, and jokes, written by the students, teachers and staff. Onirban (invigorating or inspiring in Bengali) is its name.
