Bahniman (Assamese: বহ্নিমান) is a 2016 Assamese language drama film directed by Biswajeet Bora. Filmmaker Biswajeet Bora had long wanted to make a movie that transcends the rigidity of commercial cinema with something unusual and unique from the point of view of story and treatment. His highly engaging Aisa Yeh Jahaan created cinematic history when it became the country’s first carbon-neutral film. Its subject has a humanity that connected deeply to the audiences across the country, which makes film enthusiasts and fans, especially in Assam, all the more curious to see what Biswajeet has up his sleeve in his new project. But belying expectations, the Mumbai-based filmmaker, out to prove a point or two, returns with a lot of fire power in his belly to direct a full-fledged entertainer titled ‘Bahniman’. He has been quite keen to explore some new ideas in a commercial venture for some time now. This big-budget Assamese movie, produced by Barnali Hazarika under the banner of Santoshi Maa Production, is presently drawing a lot of media attention, and not without reason. Its shooting progressing at a hurried pace in various locations, Biswajeet Bora’s film is going to be a refreshing spin on the action genre, quite unlike anything seen here. He has got the technical expertise and acumen, having spent years in Mumbai, India’s entertainment hub, where he was fortunate enough to observe a lot of well-known filmmakers at work, including the renowned Jahnu Barua, whom he also assisted for close to six years. He has left nothing to chance here. All the technical aspects are being looked after and executed with a lot of precision and planning. The story of the film revolves around three childhood friends, lost to their own fates, only to re-emerge as fierce rivals. But soon they reunite to fight for the cause of their city which is controlled by mafia kingpin Kanu Sharma. Its about friendship, lost love and revenge. There’s no greater satisfaction to a filmmaker than being on a movie set, getting to work with talented people – actors, actresses and the technicians.

Production

‘Bahniman’ has the combined presence of a number of such artistes and technicians from Hindi and Assamese cinema. Well-known Hindi film actor Yashpal Sharma, who starred in his Aisa Yeh Jahaan, heads the cast along with local heartthrob Jatin Bora. Bora is grabbing attention with a new, rather belligerent look in the film. Reminds one of what Aamir Khan fashioned in Ghajini. Whatever it is, he takes on something very different from what he has done so far in his career. Others in the cast include Rimi Hazarika, Ravi Janghu – a former Mr India winner, veteran actor Bishnu Khargharia, Deepraj Rana, Arun Hazarika, Baharul Islam, Nihal Das, Champak Sharma, Manoj Gogoi, Suneet Bora, Bipul Bora, Ramen Tamuly, Arun Bora, Rina Bora, Mahadev Deka, child artiste Ragini Bora etc.
Biswajeet has gone for artistes that look the parts. The film is Santoshi Maa Production’s second venture after ‘The Face’. The movie’s story-screenplay and dialogues have been penned by Biswajeet Bora himself. The movie’s action sequences are being directed by one of Bollywood’s top action directors Kaushal - Moses whose credits include movies like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, All Is Well, Ramaiya Vastavaiya, Commando, Badshah, Ajnabi, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns etc. It leaves one in no doubt that the action sequences will definitely deliver. Of course, Biswajeet has incorporated his own inputs and ideas to the scenes. Its getting hard to perceive interesting directors with unique filmmaking styles within the commercial framework. It will be exciting to see what Biswajeet comes up with in a project that merges action, drama and comedy. What he is careful about is avoiding predictability at any cost. There will be plenty of twists and turns in the story.
Plot

The shooting has been conducted in Guwahati, Palashbari, Sonapur, among other locations. The film is cinematographed by Mumbai-based Titu Jena. It will be edited by twice National Award winner Suresh Pai, who is considered among the best editors in Bollywood. The sound designing will be handled by Filmfare award-winning artiste Arun Nambiar, while the VFX will be directed by Mumbai’s Sachin Yadav. The film’s executive producer is Phatik Baruah. The experienced Nurrudin Ahmed handles the film’s production designing. The chief assistant to the director is Ghanashyam Kalita. Ashim Saikia is in charge of production controlling, while Moni Goswami is the production manager. ‘Bahniman’s assistant directors are Chandan Deka, Anindita Kalita and Pranjal Saikia. The film’s costume designer is Lopamudra Gogoi Bora, make-up is by Kishore Dangi and still-photography is by Pallav Jyoti Mahanta.
