BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) is the language Institute of BRAC University, Bangladesh which provides modern language teaching towards the undergraduate students of the University as well as anyone who wants to enroll into any short courses offered on modern languages namely, English, Chinese, French, Arabic and Spanish besides Bangla language teaching to foreign students in Bangladesh. In addition, a number of workshops are arranged on regular basis to enhance the language teaching skills of the faculty members.

Contents

History

In 2005, following the directives of University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh, about improving students English language proficiency, in particular, BRAC University decided to start a program called EL-Pro. They provided a modular system of language teaching to the undergraduate students only. Since then, besides regular language courses BIL is also offering language course for MBA, M.Sc in Early Childhood, M.Ed in Educational Leadership students of the university. Later, in 2008, after successful inventions and assistance to students English language proficiency development, BIL widened its horizon and became Centre for Languages (CfL) which targeted to offer other modern languages courses to the students of the university as well as the outsiders. They offered a modular system course to their students specially in Chinese, Korean, French and Arabic languages.

In July 2012, CfL transformed to BIL according to the permission of UGC, Bangladesh. They offered MA in TESOL degree to produce more trained English teacher to promote English language teaching learning in Bangladesh.

  • For Undergraduate Students:
  • Pre- University Course:This twelve weeks long program is designed for those students who are seeking to perfect and polish their English language skills to become successful BRAC University students. This course is for those students who proved themselves competent in their respective discipline during the admission text except in English.

  • MA in TESOL: The MA in TESOL is intended for aspiring and
  • for practicing teachers of English.

  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP): This course focuses on developing fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing both in and outside the classroom for the students who want to join various masters programs in BRAC University but lack competence in English. The total time duration of the course is 60 hours which consists of 2 classes per week.
  • For non-University Students:
  • EPDC (English Language Proficiency Development Course): EPDC is for those professionals who need Basic English proficiency for communication. The course reinforces on reading and listening comprehension, writing organization, informal and formal expressions, grammatical accuracy, speaking fluency, and interview skill.
