Azerbaijan State Russian Samed Vurgun Drama Theatre (Azerbaijani: Səməd Vurğun adına Azərbaycan Dövlət Rus Drama Teatrı, Russian: Азербайджанский государственный русский драматический театр имени Самеда Вургуна), is a drama theatre located in Baku, Azerbaijan performing plays in the Russian language. The performances of the theatre are mainly from the Russian works of art and literature, and the remainder are performances from Azerbaijani and European classical writers.

History

The theatre was first established on December 20, 1920, as the "State Free Satirical Agitational Theatre", however on April 29, 1921, it was renamed as the "Baku Workers' Theatre". In 1937 the name was changed to "Azerbaijan State Red Banner Theatre of Russian Drama". And since 1938, it is named as the "Azerbaijan State Russian Drama Theatre". In 1956, the theater was additionally named after the Azerbaijani poet Samed Vurgun.

Activity

Plays primarily to works of Russian literary figures such as Tolstoy, Pushkin, Chekov, Gogol, Lermontov, Mayakovsky, Lavrenyov, as well as Azerbaijani litery figures such as Jafar Jabbarli, Mirza Fatali Akhundov, Ali bey Huseynzade, Najaf bey Vazirov, Huseyn Javid, and also the works of other world classics such as Shakespeare, Schiller, Molière, Dumas, Hugo, Balzac, are staged in the theatre in Russian. The theatre makes performances not just for adults, but for children too.
