Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq Medical College, is a medical school located in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. It was established in 2012. Teaching hospitals affiliated with the college are Combined Military Hospital Muzaffarabad, largest hospital in Azad Kashmir spreading on 70 thousand square meters and Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences, one of the oldest hospitals in Azad Kashmir. AJK MC is recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and is listed in FAIMER International Medical Education Directory (IMED) of Medical Schools as well as WHO Directory of Medical Schools.

Contents

History

The College was inaugurated by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani on October 8, 2011 but established in 2012. The people of Azad Kashmir had a dire need of a Medical College which was highlighted in the Earthquake of 2005 which exposed the severe shortage of local medical facilities as well as doctors and trained nurses as patients had to be transported to the long distances which resulted in mortality.

Admission Procedure

The candidates are selected by AJK State Entry Test which is conducted by University of Health Sciences, Lahore every year. The college also offers admissions to students from Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh and KPK.

Curriculum

AJK MC has introduced internationally accepted Problem-based learning methodology integrated curriculum from its first academic year 2012 in place of discipline based curriculum on the instructions of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. World bodies endorsing this integrated curriculum include, General Professional Education for Physicians, Medical Council of Canada, World Federation for Medical Education and General Medical Council UK. Currently AJK Medical College is the first and only public sector medical school of Pakistan to introduce this teaching methodology. Besides AJK MC, only three Private (Aga Khan University, Shifa College of Medicine and Foundation University Medical College) and one military (Army Medical College) medical school are offering this system.

Departments

Its basic departments are equipped with latest computer aided laboratories, Carl-Zeiss microscopes for the students and penta-head and deca-head microscopes for demonstration and research. Although the first batch of the college is in fourth year of MBBS, the College has managed to maintain all the departments including Gynecology, Obstetrics, Medicine, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesia which are usually practiced in final year of MBBS in the Medical Schools of Pakistan.

Campus

AJK Medical College is housed in Turkish architect modern building surrounded by Hindu Kush Mountains through which Neelam and Jehlum Rivers gush through and merge. The College is designed on modern pattern and houses all the required facilities. Its library contains latest books. There is also online access to different learning resources. There are laboratories attached to all the departments, auditorium with sitting capacity of 400 audience and several class rooms to cater large and small group teaching formats and for holding seminars and symposia. In addition, there are modern skill and l I.T. Labs. Animal House, extension of library, a multidisciplinary lab, modern examination hall, a research centre and modern autopsy suite are in planning phase.

Research

AJK Medical College is committed to build research culture in consideration the pivotal role of research in modern world . Head of department of Pathology Dr. Anwar-Ul-Haque who has vast experience in conducting research activities is designated as Director of Research in AJK Medical College Muzaffarabad. The other committee members are Professors and Assistant Professors of AJKMC. Two members of committee Prof. Saeed Shafi (Head of Department Anatomy), Prof. Tariq Baqai (Head of Department Medicine) are also members of Pakistan Medical Research Council (PMRC). In this regard committee has involved all the discipline of Medicine to provide us a list of 10 research topics for our students to explore their potential as they are bound to write one good research project annually. College will hold successive workshops about research methodology to train health professionals. 1st workshop on Basic Research Methodology was conducted successfully on 20 March 2012.

    AJK MC is the only college of Pakistan which publishes three scientific journals. The official scientific journals of the college is Kashmir Journal of Medical Sciences (KJMS). It contains original articles, case reports, review articles, short communication, letters to editor, and view points.

Both hospitals are recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council as well as College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for the postgraduate residency programs in different disciplines.
