Ayakudi is a panchayat town in Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Ayakudi is thought to be the place where the kings of Ay Kingdom originated.

Ayakudi originally means Ayar (Shepherd) kudi(dwelling place ).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Ayakudi had a population of 23,410. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Ayakudi has an average literacy rate of 61%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

This place is very near(3.0 km) Palani, famous for the Lord Muruga Temple. The famous hill station called Kodaikanal is about 60 km from Ayakudi. Ayakudi is geographically split by a Pond as Old Ayakudi(East of the pond) and New Ayakudi(West) and obulapuram.

People & Living
Different community people are living in Ayakudi. There are streets only belongs to a particular community/caste.

Majority of the people are into Agriculture. Believed that rate of literacy went up to 70% by over 9 years now. Most of Female are in teaching careers, working with nearby villages around Dindugul district.

Ayakudi is famous for its cultivation of Guava fruits. Even Ayakudi is well known for its famous GUAVA Fruits market. From this guava fruits markets, Guava fruits are distributed to other parts of India and exported to other countries too. Apart from Guava, Lime, Paddy, Mango, Sugarcane and cotton are the cultivated in Ayakudi.

Ayakudi is a town panchayath now, which was under a land lord (Jamindar). There are lots of land lords are still living with their historical culture.

Education
There are Government primary schools and Private primary schools are available inside the village. Ayakudi Jamindar founded a Higher Secondary School named I T O(Irrumai Thankiya Obala Kondamma Naiyakan) Higher Secondary School, is one of main education source for this area people. Even most of the students are from Palani are studying in ITO HR Sec School because of its quality of education and discipline.

Vivekanada Vidhyalaa is a Matriculation school in Ayakudi, which is famous for its high scores in 10th and 12th standards.

Apart from this school, there are many schools in Palani namely Akshaya academy, Devi matriculation school, Government Girls and Boys Schools are the sources of school education.

Arulmigu Palani Andavar Arts and Science College, APA college for Ladies, APA poly technic, Subramianaia Engineering college are nearby Ayakudi, which facilitates people to enhance their education.

Spiritual Life
There are lots of temples in Ayakudi. These temples are founded by some group of people from a particular community. Some of temples are found by families. Normally the festivals are between March to June.
