History

Axel Music was formed in 1992 in downtown Copenhagen and over the intervening years opened 14 stores in Denmark. In February 2001 the company formed Lake Shore Distribution in Canada and launched Axelmusic.com. In April 2006 it was one of the first online stores to offer HD DVD, followed by Blu-ray in June of that year. As of 2009 it operates a network of warehouses to fulfill orders taken on its internet sites and 8 separate locations throughout Denmark for its Danish customers. Since 18 June 2012, PlanetAxel is bankrupt. It is with great sadness, deep regret and utter embarrassment that we announce the closure and bankruptcy of PlanetAxel.com On Monday afternoon, 18 June 2012 the board of directors have informed us that no further investment will be made in the company. This comes in light of the recently finished 2011 financials which showed such an insurmountable deficit and loss to company value that a swift decision was made almost overnight.

Trivia

The company maintains separate sites for its customers inside and outside Denmark.

On the international site the customer has the option for viewing the price of an item in Euros, US Dollars, Canadian Dollar, Norwegian Kroner, Swedish Krona, Australian Dollar, Swiss Franc and British Pounds.

One interesting feature of the international site is that, once signed in, the customer can, in the case of Blu-ray Discs, elect to be emailed as to whether or not US sourced versions of films have been found to be region free. Axel Music staff test each US disc to see if it has been region coded and then show on the film's item page that non-US customers can order this title.
