His father, Late Manab Gangopadhyay, noted academician and litterateur, formerly Reader and Head of the Department of Bengali Language and Literature in Government colleges in West Bengal, India, including Presidency College and University was an author of novels and short stories of exceptional themes and stylistics, critical and philosophical treatises in Bengali and English. Sriparna Mukhopadhyay (Gangopadhyay), on the other hand was a celebrated classical dancer and singer of songs by Tagore. Due to his father’s transferable job, Avik Gangopadhyay had his schooling in different places and in different Institutions like Sri Aurobindo Vidyamandir, St. Thomas, Ballygunge Government High School, MAMC High School, Bidhan Institution. He graduated with Honours in English Language and Literature from Durgapur Government College(1989), completed Post Graduation in English from Jadavpur University, Kolkata(1992), and did Bachelor of Education from University of Calcutta(1998). Avik is married to singer of light classical songs Swati Gangopadhyay.

Career

Although he has made his mark in literature multifarious ways, it is the world of poetry that appealed to him the most. Most of his poems, written from his late teens, are either confined to himself, or presented in Literary assemblages or published in little magazines and weekend literary columns of newspapers. These poems have been later collected and published both in English and Bengali in Editions like The Murmur of the Mist( 2002), The Shadow before Dusk(2002), Shells Upon the Shore(2002), Rup Arup Aparup(2002), Vishanna Chhaya(2002), Ekaler Kobita(2004), Ekaler Chorita(2004). He also has short stories to his credit which are published in the collections Morshumi Mon(2004), Anurag Golpo Samvar(2002), Ekhon Golpo(2010). Often experimenting and researching modern symbolic poetic drama in classical strain, he found his inspiration to venture further into the less traversed path of Bengali poetic drama. These have also been published in Sarodiya Proma(2004) and Bhashabandhan Utsav Sonkhya(2011). However, his literary comfort zone has always remained in the domain of critical literature. A glimpse of the titles and themes of his books and the treatment of the corresponding themes in them will bring to light his efforts to unravel the not-so-discussed regions in interdisciplinary studies. Almost all his works are flavored by his grasp in the fields of psychology, philosophy, history, eastern and western classical music, fine arts and treasures of antiquity. By profession he is a teacher, well known for his knowledge in diverse fields, enjoying immense popularity and respect from students and their parents. Already the author of 30 Published books on topics like aesthetics, literature and language, his latest venture of editing 6 books of poems and short stories in Bengali and English has received considerable critical attention both in home and abroad.
