Ave Maria Convent Branch School (AMC Branch) is a major catholic girls' school in Negombo, Sri Lanka. The school is administrated by the Dominican sisters of Malta. There are classes from Gr.1 to A/L classes. It is the Branch school of Ave Maria Convent, Negombo.

History

The first foundation stone for the Ave Maria branch school was laid on 14 June 1998 by his excellency Nicholas Marcus Fernando the former archbishop of Colombo. The ceremonial opening was held on the 10 January 1999. Ave Maria Convent branch school is a Catholic school with particular emphasis on Christian values and attitudes. The foundation stone was laid to the second school building by Rev.Sr Anita Fernando, the provincial superior of the congregation of Good Shepherd sisters on 19 April 2002, and Rev. Fr. Lesley Fernando. In 2005 next foundation stone for the building of comfort station was laid. Today there are nearly 1100 students studying in Ave Maria Branch School.

  • Rev. Sr. Nilani Silva (Good Shepherd Convent) was the 1st principal of the school. She worked 1999- 2005 as the principal.

    Born on 26.08.1956, Tudella up to O/L and studied A/L at Christ King College, Tudella. Obtained the Master Degree on Religious Education at the University of “ Regina Mundi” in Rome, Italy. Entered Religious life in the congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Malta and did the Religious profession on 30 August 1981 in Malta. As professional qualification obtained the Diploma on spirituality and Counseling in Rome.

    Primary section (building no. 1)

    There are grade 1 to grade 5 in Sinhalese medium, 3 classes for each grade. The student learn a basic education in primary ages following Sri Lankan Syllabus. They learn mathematics, Sinhalese(as mother language), English, Tamil (as second language) and environmental studies. The primary sectional head is Mrs. Thushari Fernando.

    Secondary section (building no. 2)

    There are Gr.6 - Gr.11 (O/L) In Sinhalese and English medium,3 classes for each section.Ordinary level (O/L) is the major exam in this section.there are Sinhalese,English,Science,Mathematics,History and Religious Knowledge as compulsory subjects in O/Ls.There are 3 optional subject groups.

  • I Group-Commerce and Accounting,Citizen Education and Geography
  • II Group-Western Music,Eastern Music,Dancing,Art and English Literature.
  • III Group-Information Communication Technology,Health and Physical Science,Home Economics Science and Agriculture.
  • O/L students have to select one subject from each group with 6 compulsory subjects for the examination.

    Advanced level section (building no. 3)

    There are science, commerce and art streams in both mediums. Every student must pass O/L examination to do Advanced Level examination.
