The Austin Aquarium is home to thousands of different species from reptiles to exotic birds and of course marine animals and tons more. Visitors are able to hand feed sharks, sting rays, birds, and fish, or get up close and personal with many of the reptiles and other animals on exhibit. The Aquarium provides excitement and learning opportunities about the marine life and offers educational programs and events for children. Owner Marc Gottlieb has over 8,000 living animals representing habitats from the Oregon shores to remote Indonesian Islands, and states this on their website. “We hope to inspire a young generation of ocean explorers and conservationists through education and a shared experience with a live animal, to create an appreciation for the oceans,”.
As of June 2013, the Austin Aquarium had filed for a permit to open the 22,000 square feet (2,000 m2) facility the City of Austin Planning and Development Review on U.S. Route 183 in northern Travis County, Texas, near Anderson Mill. The aquarium is owned and operated by Portland Aquarium owner Vince Covino.
In July 2013, Austin Code Compliance issued two notices of violation for keeping animals and water tanks on the site without proper documentation.
