Characteristics

atmosph3re is a computer software:

  • also called a web application, that works in a web browser. atmosph3re currently supports Firefox, Internet Explorer/Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari.
  • atmosph3re is installed locally on a home computer that will act as a web streaming server to deliver music over wifi, cabled network, or the Internet. It is, thus, a personal media streaming software that distinguishes itself from conventional Streaming music services, where users do not own any of the albums.
  • atmosph3re is bundled with the Apache http server, and the mySql database server.
  • atmosph3re scans all folders containing music and generates a database with folder names and file names. atmosph3re manages a musical digital library.
  • atmosph3re is album-based; it manages music albums, not individual songs.
  • atmosph3re installs on Windows machines, but can be accessed from any platform. OsX, Windows, Linux and Android devices can access atmosph3re. atmosph3re does not require the use of specific or dedicated hardware, like home audio players or networked audio players.
  • atmosph3re searches through music by release date, style, appreciation, name and number of plays or in alphabetical order. Direct queries by artist or album names are also supported. These are the means by which one can build a digital music library.
  • atmosph3re builds listening history for all albums and by all users.
  • atmosph3re uses a javascript music player, called jPlayer, to play music in the browser. Default playback is done in HTML5 if possible, reverting to Adobe Flash player in other circumstances.
  • atmosph3re can also launch music in an external music player.
  • atmosph3re is entirely built on the Bootstrap (front-end framework), thus conforming to responsive web design guidelines. "It provides an optimal viewing and interaction experience across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones)"
  • atmosph3re plays whole albums or individual songs, and allows for the construction of playlists directly in the browser, or in the external player.
  • atmosph3re requires user authentication to allow access to music. Multiple users can access one instance of atmosph3re.
  • User access is differentiated, meaning that multiple users can each see a different part of one big music collection.
  • atmosph3re is a commercial software, licensed on a per-installation basis.
  • History

Initially developed in 2005 to answer Turbine interactive's internal needs, atmosph3re has been created to manage and stream individual music collections.

atmosph3re has been deployed amongst techno/electronica DJs and music lovers in Montreal and Quebec in Canada.

    Development

atmosph3re has been in continuous development by Guillaume Carrier, from Turbine interactive (Montreal - Canada), since 2005.

Initially, Turbine interactive specialized in providing eLearning and distance learning solutions. Its main focus has since been reoriented towards providing solutions to small and medium-sized companies, and towards providing a universal personal music streaming solution for universal mobile devices and desktops alike.
