Atlee High School is a secondary school serving south-central Hanover County, receiving most students from Chickahominy Middle School. Atlee is a part of the Hanover County School District led by its Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Michael Gill. Vincent D'Agostino held the position of principal from 2002 to 2010, but then was named principal at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology. Jennifer Cohodas held the position of principal from 2010-2014, but transitioned to Director of Accreditation and Accountability on July 1, 2014.

Atlee High School opened in 1991 with an enrollment of nearly 2000 students. Over 1,700 students are currently enrolled. in 2015, Atlee was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the 1073rd best High School in America and number 32 in Virginia.

Atlee is an International Baccalaureate world school, certified for the Diploma Programme as school 1191 in January, 2000. In 2008, Atlee's newspaper, "The Shield", created an online edition of its paper on my.hsj.org. Other Atlee publications include their daily televised show, "Raider TV"; their yearbook, "The Legend", their yearly literary magazine, "Elements", and their newly created biweekly televised show, "Feature Friday". Atlee also hosts a FIRST robotics team as a combined part of its Technology Student Association branch, and has competed for their sixth year as team 1599. At the 2007 NASA/VCU Regional competition, Atlee placed 8th out of 66 teams.

Athletics

Atlee's first district title was won by the girls indoor track team in 1991. Since then, there have been numerous titles in many sports including the Virginia High School League AAA State Championship in Softball in 2002 and Girls Basketball in 2003.

  • Baseball - 1993, 1996, and 1997 AAA Capital District Champions.
  • Basketball (boys) - VHSL Record for most points scored in a single game by 2 teams totaling 255 points Atlee 135 Goochland 130 on 12/01/05; also holds record for most points scored in a single season of 2221 for the 2005–2006 season; Most three-point field goals made, game 25 Atlee vs. Maggie Walker 02/2006 & 20 Atlee vs. Dinwiddie 02/2006 also Most three-point field goals made, season: 331 Atlee 2005-06.
  • Basketball (girls) - 1993, 1997, and 2002–2004 AAA Capital District Champions; 2003 AAA Central Region and Virginia High School League AAA State Champions. The 2003 team is also in a 9 way tie for second place for the most win in a single VHSL season with 30 wins for the 2003–2003 season.
  • Cheerleading - 1997–1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 AAA Capital District Champions; 1998, 1999 and 2004 AAA Central Region Champions, 2006 runner-up; Central Region top 4 finishes leading to AAA State competition appearances from 1997 to 1999 and 2001–2007, ten in total, which is more than any other Central Region school, finishing as a State top 5 finalist in 1999 and 2004, and 6th in 2005.
  • Cross Country (boys) - 1994, 1995, 2000–2003, and 2006 AAA Capital District Champions. In 1996, Ronald (Dean) Fields was the Virginia High School League AAA Individual State Runner-up. In 2006, Tyler Pittman was voted by the VHSL to be the Cross Country Runner of the Year. In 2008, Ben Dejarnette was named the Richmond Times Dispatch Runner of the Year following a 2nd place finish in the Virginia State AAA meet.
  • Cross Country (girls) - 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2000–2006 AAA Capital District Champions. In 1996, Jennifer Meador was the Virginia High School League AAA Individual State Runner-up.
  • Field Hockey (girls) - 2006 AAA Capital District Champions.
  • Football - 1996 and 1998 AAA Capital District Champions. In 2006, Raider Stadium was named National High School Football Field of the Year by the Sports Turf Managers Association.
  • Golf (boys) - 1991, 1995, 1996, 2000–2003, 2005, and 2006 AAA Capital District Champions.
  • Gymnastics - 1993–1997, 1999, and 2002 AAA Capital District Champions; 1995–1997, 1999–2001, and 2003 AAA Central Region Champions; Individual All Around Virginia High School League AAA State Champions in 2001 by Emma Cross and 1995 by Rachael Rounds. Cross was also the 2001 VHSL state champion on the balance beam. Rounds was also the 1995 VHSL state champion on the vault.
  • Soccer (boys) - 1992, 1993, 1996, and 1999–2006 AAA Capital District Champions; 2001 AAA Central Region Champions.
  • Soccer (girls) - 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2000–2005 AAA Capital District Champions. AAA Central Region Champions 2007.
  • Softball - 1992, 1995, 1996, 2001, and 2002 AAA Capital District Champions; 1992 and 2002 AAA Central Region Champions; 1992 Virginia High School League AAA State runners-up, 2002, 2015, and 2016 State Champions.
  • Swimming (boys) - 2001 and 2005 AAA Central Region Champions (not contested at the district level).
  • Swimming (girls) - 2002–2006 AAA Central Region Champions (not contested at the district level). In 2005, Hannah Brinks was the 100 Butterfly Individual Virginia High School League AAA State Champion with a time of 57.25.
  • Tennis (boys) - 1993, 1997, and 2001–2005 AAA Capital District Champions.
  • Tennis (girls) - 1991, 1993–1996, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2006 AAA Capital District Champions. The Doubles team of Napier/Roberts were the VHSL AAA State runners-up in 2001.

  • Track & Field-Indoor (boys) - 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999–2002, 2004, 2008, and 2009 AAA Capital District Champions; 1999, 2000, 2002,and 2009 AAA Central Region Champions. In 2001, Brian Ford was the 300m Dash Individual Virginia High School League AAA State Champion with the time of 34.05. In 2008, Ben Dejarnette was the 3200m Virginia High School League AAA State Champion with the time of 9:22.65.
  • Track & Field-Indoor (girls) - 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999–2002 and 2004 AAA Capital District Champions; 1995–1997, and 2002 AAA Central Region Champions. In 2000, Caroline Harvey won the National Long Jump Championship with a jump of 19'234". In 1997, Courtney Neal was the Long Jump Individual Virginia High School League AAA State Champion with the distance of 18-10. In 1994, Jennifer Meadow was the 1000m Run Individual Virginia High School League AAA State Champion with the time of 2:58.00.
  • Track & Field-Outdoor (boys) - 1995–1997, and 1999–2004 AAA Capital District Champions; 2002 AAA Central Region Champions.
