History
Athikkadai Muslims began to rule in Tamil Nadu in 1692. In the era of King Nawab and Serfoji II, Athikkadai emerged as a residential village. Its name may be derived from the tree name “Haathi” and the density of the tree “Kaadu”. Over time "Haati Kaadu" became Athikkadai.
It is a modern village controlled and administered by Jamath Leaders (Mosque / Masjid administrator and treasury). The residents of this place depend on the Jamath on occasions such as death, marriage, laws, wills and trade.

As of 2001 India census, Athikkadai had a population of 2756. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Athikkadai has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 69%.
