Association of Writers of Serbia

The Association of Writers of Serbia (UKS) (Serbian: Удружење књижевника Србије, Udruženje književnika Srbije) is Serbia's official writing association.

History

The association was founded on May 26, 1905 under the presidency of Milan Đ. Milićević.

The first management consisted of:

  • Simo Matavulj, acting as president
  • Jovan Skerlić, secretary
  • Dobrosav Ružić, treasurer
  • Živojin O. Dačić, librarian
  • Rista J. Odavić, host
  • Post-WWII

    As a result of the Slovene Writers' Association's support of the 1989 Kosovo miners' strike the UKS broke off its relations with the Slovene Writers' Association.

    Mission

    The UKS states its main goals as:

  • gathering Serbian authors in the same community
  • to protect the professional interests of its members
  • to work on their interpersonal relationships
  • to work on relations with publishers and the general public
  • to make their job(s) easier
  • to help its members or their families who are in poverty.
