History

The present hall was built around 1800 for James Smith, a member of the banking family that established Smith's Bank. It was the birthplace of his son, Augustus Smith, Member of Parliament for Truro, before being acquired by William Longman, the publisher, in 1859. A large part of the estate, to the North of the hall, was sold off to establish Ashlyns School in 1930. The hall was then owned by the Cooper and Kingsley families before it was converted for use as offices in 1991. Another section of the estate, this time to the West of the hall, was sold off to establish Ashlyns Care Home in around 2000. The hall itself is currently occupied by BAM Nuttall.
