Arvind Kumar Sinha (born 28 May 1954) is a FIDE master and a reputed International rated chess player. He is considered to be one of Bihar's best chess players of all time.

Arvind Kumar Sinha became Bihar's first and only FIDE master in 2008. He achieved 7th position in Commonwealth Chess Championship held at London in 1986. He has been Bihar Champion in 1981,1983 and 1983.

During his career as an employee in Reserve Bank of India, he represented R.B.I Patna every time and has been champion in Rapid and Blitz tournaments in Inter RBI competitions throughout his career until he retired from RBI in 2013.

He was Secretary Bihar State Chess Association in 1980-81-82 and again serving as Secretary All Bihar Chess Association since 2008.

Early life

Arvind Kumar Sinha was born on 28 May 1954 at a village near Nawada in Bihar. Shortly thereafter his family moved to Patna, where he grew up. His father Late Shri Bisheswar Prasad was a state government employee in Bihar. Arvind Kumar Sinha lost his father on 11 Jan 1974, when he was pursuing graduation. After that tragic incident, by support of his mother late Smt Rampati devi (died on 21 Jan 2000) and never to forget support from Noted academic and veteran Congress leader(MLC) Late Padmadeo Narayan Sharma he successfully completed his graduation and worked as a Librarian in Vanijya Mahavidyalay till he joined Reserve Bank of India.

Arvind Kumar Sinha is the eldest of 2 children. He is 5 years elder than his brother Shri Murari Prasad Sinha. His younger brother is Chief Field Manager in Sahara India.

Arvind Kumar Sinha learned basics of chess from his relative and mastered it after tremendous practice and dedication even under poor economic condition.

Personal life

In February 1980, he married Smt Seema Sinha.They are parents of 4 children.

Chess career

  • He is the first and only FIDE master from Bihar. He achieved this feat in 1986.
  • His highest FIDE career rating was 2325 in 1986
  • He was awarded with prestigious Bihar Shri title by the then Bihar CM Bhagwat Jha Azad.
  • He is the only player from Bihar to qualify for National A (three times).
  • In National Premiere (A) Championship held in Bombay in 1986, he defeated young IM Vishwanathan Anand who is currently 5 times World Chess Champion.
  • He has secured 7th position in commonwealth Chess Championship held in London 1986.
  • Secured 5th position in UBME Trophy International Open Chess Tournament held in Dubai in 1988
  • He was Bihar chess champion in 1981,1983 and 1986.
  • Currently he is a Chess Trainer as also the Honorary secretary of ALL BIHAR CHESS ASSOCIATION(ABCA).
  • Under his supervision ABCA has successfully hosted National U-17 Boys and Girls chess championship in 2014, National Youth(U-25) Championship in 2015 and likely to hold National Cities Team Championship in May 2016.
