Early life

Biyarslanov’s family left Chechnya when he was four years old due to ongoing violence. He migrated to Toronto from Azerbaijan at age 10 and started boxing in 2007 after his brother recommended the sport for self-defense.

Career

He won a gold medal in the men's light welterweight category at the 2015 Pan American Games. He defeated Argentinian Lucas Gimenez and Venezuelan Luis Arcon before upsetting Cuban Olympic Bronze medalist Yasniel Toledo from Cuba.

Before he had been named best Canadian fighter in his weight class (64 kg), and won 3 Nationals. He won the bronze in the Belgrade 52nd International Tournament (2014) and received gold at the Ontario Silver Gloves Tournament (2014)(2015) He represented Canada at the 2012 Brandenburg International Tournament (bronze), 2012 Youth World Championships (Top 10) and 2013 Odessa, Ukraine, International Tournament (gold).

In July 2016, he was officially named to Canada's Olympic team.
