The Appleton medal and prize is awarded for distinguished research in environmental, earth or atmospheric physics. It was originally called the "Chree medal and prize" after Dr. Charles Chree but was renamed in 2008 by the Institute of Physics, after Edward Victor Appleton. It is currently awarded in even-dated years.
