The village is home to the 454 acres (184 ha) Apedale Community Country Park. The park is unusual for the area as it was previously an opencast mine.
The area has a long history of mining, with the nearby former collieries at Silverdale and Holditch also having been redeveloped for other uses.
Hughley Brook
Hughley Brook is a site of Special Scientific Interest in Shropshire. It is one of the Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points for the Sheinwoodian, an age of the Wenlock, the second series of the Silurian, where the conodont Pterospathodus amorphognathoides first appeared.
