Early and personal life
Hickling was born in South Africa, Johannesburg. He trained as an actor at Manchester University (Arden School of Theatre) and went on to study for his doctorate in Arts of the Stage in Paris at University Paris 8. He went on to direct films related to LGBT themes. His films have been screened in LGBT film festivals worldwide.
