Biography

Annabelle Boettcher studied in Toulouse (France), Munich, Freiburg, Beirut (Lebanon) and Damascus (Syria). She did five years of research for her PhD on Sunni state Islam in Syria and studied with a number of Syrian Muslim scholars such as the Naqshbandiyya Shaikh Ahmad Kuftaru, the Grandmufti of Syria. Later she taught at universities in Berlin, Indonesia, Paris, Boston, and was guest professor for European Islam at the University of Vienna. She consulted private and public institutions. and was also a contributor to the Neue Züricher Zeitung.

From 2005 to 2015, she worked as an advisor for humanitarian access, security and frontline negotiations with armed non-state actors for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Iraq, Yemen, Niger, Bangladesh, Switzerland, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey.

Currently she is a professor at the University of Southern Denmark, adjunct professor at the Free University of Berlin and senior research associate at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin.
