Ann Mallek

Personal life

Mallek is the daughter of longtime Albemarle County residents John Huckle, an area veterinarian, and Jacquelyn "Babs" Huckle who once served on the Albemarle Board of Zoning Appeals. Mallek graduated from Albemarle High School in 1967. In 1971, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology from Connecticut College. Mallek is married to Leo Mallek, a general dentist with a practice in Earlysville, who she has two daughters with, Kate Mallek Pemberton and Laura Mallek. The couple manages their family farm in Earlysville, where they produce grass-fed beef and have an organic garden.

Supervisor

Mallek was elected supervisor in the 2007 Virginia elections alongside state representatives. She took her oath of office on the 21st of December of the same year while her term began on the 8th of the following month. Because of her campaign's focus on transparency and accessibility, at the time of her swearing in she had already scheduled neighborhood meetings for March. In meetings, she has been noted for her ability to hold the line for what she calls the "different investments" needed for the "big diversity of needs" in the county.

2007 election

Mallek was unopposed for the Democratic nomination, allowing her to focus on the general election from the start. During the campaign, Mallek was noted for her extensive efforts meeting residents door to door to hear their concerns. Growth was described "the issue" of supervisor races that year. She expressed her concern that development had sped up during Wyant's term without needed improvements in infrastructure, citing resident's complaints of having to conserve water as new homes get built. Despite being out-raised, she went on to defeat Republican David Wyant, by over ten percentage points in the general election, in what was described as the "biggest upset" in supervisor races that year.

2011 election

On January 13, 2011, Mallek announced her intention to seek a second term as county supervisor. In her announcement speech, Mallek promised to focus on infrastructure needs and funding challenges, stating that "most important part of the job is to listen." More specifically, she said her focus in her next term would be on the need for effective investment of county funds in the most crucial services and funding the county's capital improvement program to promote local job growth and services. Mallek also stated that during her second term she would focus on balancing financial investments without compromising the county's scenery, history, neighborhood or schools and insure continual investment in Crozet's downtown projects. As of June 2011, she was unopposed for reelection.
