Andrey Shary (Russian: Андре́й Ша́рый; born June 17, 1965 in Belogorsk, RSFSR) is a Russian journalist, author and media manager. He studied journalism at the State Institute of International Relations in Moscow, graduating in 1987. Shary worked for the Soviet daily Pravda from 1987–1990, and then moved to the weekly Rossiya (1990–1994). In 1992 he began cooperation with Radio Svoboda, the Russian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Inc. From 1994 - 1996 he worked as a freelance journalist in the former Yugoslavia - based in Zagreb. Since 1996 he is a senior broadcaster, since 2016 - Director for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty's Russian Service and an author of dozen books on the Yugoslav wars, history of Central Europe, modern popular culture, and travel journals. Shary also has written numerous articles and commentaries published in the journals and magazines Inostrannaya literatura, Neprikosnovennyi zapas, GEO, GEO-Traveller, Chetyrye sezona, Itogi, Vsemirny sledopyt, Pravozashitnik, Zhurnalist and in various other Russian and European newspapers and journals.
