Life and career

Cohen was born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Rockaway, Queens and attended SUNY New Paltz. Currently, he is a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and an attorney. He has served as a member of Bronx Community Board 8. Formerly, he worked for Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, as a Court Attorney to a Bronx Supreme Court Justice and most recently taught classes as an Assistant Adjunct Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

New York City Council

Councilman G. Oliver Koppell was term-limited in 2013 and unable to run for another term, and as a result, Cohen entered the race to succeed him. After winning the primary, he easily was elected to a full term in November 2013.
