Belle began his musical career at the age of 22, shortly after returning home from college. In 2007, he launched his solo career in Chicago, performing at various local venues including SPACE and Schubas Tavern. He released his debut EP All Those Pretty Lights on September 9, 2008.

His song "In My Veins" was featured in episodes of Grey's Anatomy, Castle, Pretty Little Liars, and The Vampire Diaries. However, the track was not featured on Belle's debut album The Ladder, which was released on February 23, 2010. His song "Sky's Still Blue" was featured in a Microsoft commercial promoting the Windows 7, Windows Live and Windows Phone 7 ecosystem. It was made available as a free download from Microsoft. The track was included in an EP entitled The Daylight, which was digitally released on February 28, 2012.

2013–2015: Black Bear

For his sophomore album Black Bear, Belle wrote songs that were autobiographical, with themes ranging from wrestling with God to restoring personal relationships. The album consists of folk songs with influences from M83, Beach House and Washed Out. On the process of creating the record, he said: "I didn’t want to be stuck in that niche of being just an acoustic singer-songwriter, [...] I wanted to make music like they were making." Black Bear was released in August 20, 2013 and was produced in Norman, Oklahoma by Chad Copelin. Belle stated in an interview with USA Today that he wrote the album's first single "Pieces" for his wife not too long after they got married in Chicago in 2012.

An EP entitled Black Bear (Hushed), featuring stripped down versions of five of the album's tracks, was released on October 7, 2014.

2016–2017: Dive Deep

In August 2016, Belle released "Dive Deep" as the lead single from his upcoming third album of the same name. A follow-up single, "You", was released on October 28. On November 19, a Christmas song called "Back for Christmas" was released.

Dive Deep is set for release on August 25, 2017. The new album Dive Deep came out on August 25, 2017. Their album debuted at the Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart at position #8.
