History

America Needs You was founded in 2009 by Robert Reffkin under the name New York Needs You while he was a vice president at Goldman Sachs. Reffkin faced several challenges in his youth, but was aided by nonprofit organizations that helped him achieve college and career success, and founded NYNY at the age of 29 to mobilize a movement of young professional volunteers to assist low-income, first-generation college students in realizing their college and career ambitions.

The NYNY program expanded to New Jersey in 2012, and America Needs You was launched in January 2014 as an umbrella organization.

In January 2015, America Needs You launched America Needs You - Illinois

Programs

ANY recruits young professionals who are leaders in their fields who volunteer as mentors for low-income college students who are first in their families to go to college, called fellows.

Over a three-year program, mentors provide professional development advice and coaching, and the program helps with professional attire and job placement.

The organization has an annual gala that traditionally takes place at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

Leadership

Kimberly Harris became CEO of ANY in 2013, with Reffkin remaining chairman of the board.
