Scognamiglio was born and raised in Torre del Greco. His family had been involved with cameo-manufacturing since 1857. Their company is called M+M Scognamiglio. When he was 13, he started helping his mother, who was a designer at their company, with silhouette designs. Later he started carving shells and got more involved in the family business while he was studying.

When he joined law school, he became friends with Mennella, whom he’d known growing up.

Career

After graduating from law school, Scognamiglio moved to New York City to expand his family business. In 2001, he started selling his family’s cameos on Home Shopping Network. The same year he and Mennella, who had come to New York to study architecture at Parsons School of Design, decided to launch their own jewelry firm, named Faraone Mennella. Scognamiglio kept on working with cameos as well. The two provided their jewellery samples to Patricia Field, Sex and the City’s stylist, on recommendation of Sarah Jessica Parker. They had their big break after their jewellery was used on the show several times.

Scognamiglio and Mennella started a 5-year collaboration with Carolina Herrera in 2004. They designed for Carolina Herrera a collection of pieces inspired by her couture gowns. The following year, they lanched Faraone Mennella Couture.

In 2006, Scognamiglio launched Amedeo, his line of cameos, and opened a boutique on the Upper East Side in New York City followed by a second store in Tokyo’s Ginza district a few months later. Complimenting his cameos, The New York Times wrote that "he offers an iteration of his family’s craft freed from its folkloric past."

In 2013, the Italian designer duo launched a fashion jewelry diffusion line designed and sold exclusively on Home Shopping Network in the United States and on QVC internationally.
