Ambition school leadership launch film

Ambition School Leadership is a UK charitable organisation with the mission of addressing educational disadvantage. The organisation is building a network of exceptional school leaders at all levels to transform the lives of the children who need it most.

Contents

Ambition School Leadership provides world-class leadership development and technical training to educators across England and Wales – from teachers aspiring to lead their department to CEOs steering multiple schools, and all the crucial leadership roles in between.

They work with partners across the education sector to support the long-term improvement of schools in challenging contexts and offer clear pathways of expert career progression for the most important job in the world.

The organisation is working for a fair society built on an education system where every child can thrive, no matter what their background.

Origins

Ambition School Leadership was formed in November 2016 from two education charities, The Future Leaders Trust and Teaching Leaders.

Leadership Development Programmes

Ambition School Leadership runs leadership development programmes in England that enable school leaders to create more impact in schools that serve disadvantaged children and their communities.

Middle leadership

  • The Aspiring Leadership Programme provides aspiring middle leaders with the key tools and theories needed to lead teaching and learning.
  • Teaching Leaders is the flagship middle leadership programme for high-potential middle leaders. With programmes tailored for primary and secondary practitioners, Teaching Leaders stretches and supports them to lead with confidence and transform pupil outcomes.
  • The Middle Leadership Programme (with NPQML) is tailored leadership development for a school’s whole middle leadership team.
  • Senior leadership and headship

  • The Senior Leadership Programme (with NPQSL) is for current and aspiring senior leaders who are passionate about improving their practice in order to close the attainment gap in their schools.
  • Future Leaders is the flagship programme for senior leaders who have the talent and commitment to become headteachers of challenging schools within three years.
  • The Headship Programme (with NPQH) is for senior leaders preparing to reach headship in 12-18 months or for headteachers looking for further development.
  • System leadership

  • Executive Educators provides current and aspiring system leaders with the knowledge and skills to improve outcomes and life chances for children across a group of schools, with tailored programmes for executive headteachers and CEOs of multi-academy trusts.
  • Impact

The leaders Ambition School Leadership develop help disadvantaged children make more progress than disadvantaged children in similar schools.

    Middle leaders

The charity's middle leaders raise pupil achievement to meet or exceed the national average.

  • Participants on the Teaching Leaders Secondary programme consistently raise the proportion of A*-C grades in their departments. Each cohort brings results from below the national average to meeting or exceeding it.
  • Pupils in the Impact Initiatives of the secondary participants outperform those in other eligible schools for expected levels of progress in both English and maths.
  • On average, more low-attaining pupils in schools they are working with on the Teaching Leaders programme are making the required progress than in other challenging schools and nationally
  • Senior leaders

Their senior leaders demonstrate impact from the outset.

  • After less than a term hosting Future Leaders in their first year of the programme, 77% of headteachers say their participants have demonstrated impact in their school.
  • Each year their participants complete over 200 evidence-informed school improvement projects.
  • Headteachers

Disadvantaged children at schools that have been led by the charity's headteachers for at least two years make better progress and have higher attainment than those in similar schools.

  • 39.7% of disadvantaged students in schools led by their heads for two or more years achieve five or more A*-C GCSEs (including English and maths), compared to 36.9% in similar schools and 36.7% nationally.
  • 83% of students in schools led by their heads for two or more years achieve Level 4 or above in reading, writing and maths at the end of Key Stage 2, compared to a national average of 80%.
  • Retention in challenging schools

Ambition School Leadership has been developing leaders on selective programmes since 2006. Over 70% are still working in challenging schools.
