History

Alice Donut Alice Donut Alice Donut at the Off Ramp Seattle WA 1992 John

Formed in 1986 after the demise of the Sea Beasts, a band at Columbia University. Ted Houghton, Tomas Antona, Dave Giffen and Tom Meltzer recruited drummer Stephen Moses and quickly found a substantial audience at CBGB. Guitarist Michael Jung soon replaced Meltzer, Austrian born Bassist Sissi Schulmeister joined the band in 1991. By 1991 the lineup had changed to Tomas Antona: lead vocals, Michael Jung: guitar, Richard Marshall: guitar, Stephen Moses: drums, Sissi Schulmeister: bass. This lineup recorded and toured relentlessly, eventually disbanding in 1996. Between 1988 and 1996 the band toured in the United States, Europe and Japan and played over 1000 shows., including a show at the Reading Festival in 1993.

In 2001 Alice Donut started recording and writing again and in 2003's Three Sisters, their first release after their hiatus, was recorded as a four-piece with Tom Antona on vocals, Michael Jung on guitar, Stephen Moses on drums and Sissi Schulmeister on bass.

Guitarist Dave Giffen rejoined the group for Fuzz, which was recorded in Brooklyn's BC Studio with longtime co-producer Martin Bisi, mixed and engineered by Joel Hamilton, and released on September 5, 2006.

The band's tenth studio album followed, Ten Glorious Animals, released in September 2009, on Jello Biafra's Record Label Alternative Tentacles.

In 2011 the legendary NYC underground psychedelic punk rock group celebrates its 25th (and counting) anniversary. To mark this occasion, there is a documentary on the band called "Freaks in Love: :: A Quarter Century in Underground Rock with ALICE DONUT". The full-length film includes interviews with Jello Biafra, Greg Werckman, Martin Bisi, Curt Kirkwood, and many others. It explores what it took to navigate the world of underground rock from the band's humble mid-80s beginnings at CBGB's and signing to Alternative Tentacles, through the relentless touring of the US and Europe, to performing at Reading Festival and touring with Blind Melon, to negotiating the major label feeding frenzy of the mid-90s culminating with a look at how changing times affect a long-running underground band. From 120 dB Films and Duotone Films.

In 2012 the album with the same title "Freaks in love" was released. Alice Donut still performs live on some occasions, like a show in 2014 in France.

on 11th November 2016 Tomas Antona states on facebook that Alice Donut are writing a new album. No completion or release date is confirmed.
