As a child the Mitgutsch family was evacuated to Allgäu in World War II due to airstrike back bombing on Munich. Return the Munich he trained at Graphical Academy as a lithographer which is a former profession of manual photo editing, layout and printing. In the 1960s, Kurt Seelmann, a psychologist for children inspired him to create a special kind of picture books for children.
