Alcione Sortica is a Brazilian novelist. The author is an official member and consul of Poets of the World, and a professor at Castro Alves Academy for Arts, Sciences and Literature.

Biography

The writer is a former government income tax auditor. After his retirement, he devoted his time to the arts, mainly to literature, but with contributions in music and painting. In poetry, part of his work was translated and adapted into Spanish and presented in Argentina. He received several literary awards, especially in southern Brazil, for his essays, stories, poems and other texts. His book Cacos do Tempo (Pieces of Time), published in 2004, prepared the way for a new work called Beira de Açude (Edge of a Pond). Alcione Sortica has been awarded for his stories of urban and regional characters, presented mainly in short stories, chronicles and poetry.

Early life

Born in the town of Cachoeira do Sul (RS) on December 17, 1935 in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, home of his grandparents. He was the second son of the merchant Antonio Osorio Sortica and Maria Luiza Sortica. He completed his high school studies at the gymnasium Marist High School Roque Gonzales, where he completed a technician course in accounting.

Education

He studied at, where in addition to studies of Portuguese and Brazilian literature, he completed studies in Latin and French. Later on, he moved to Porto Alegre where he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 1974. He co-founded Gonçalvense Student League.

Family

In 1963 he married Ivone Teresinha Almansa. The couple was blessed with two sons: Edward (merchant, born in 1968) and Martha (medical, born in 1971).

Career

In 1967, they moved to Porto Alegre (RS), where he worked as controller for Ernesto Neugebauer chocolate factory. In 1968, he joined the Ministry of Finance as federal public servant (income tax agent). During two decades of public service, he worked for SERPRO, Brazilian Federal Data Processing Agency. He retired in 1990.

Arts

After retirement he devoted himself to the arts, first music and painting and then in 2000, with the birth of his first grandchild – Stephanie – his writing grew in importance. The poem "Ray of Light" remained shelved until, on a visit to the House of the Poets of Rio Grande. There he met Mrs. Santa Inez Soares da Rocha Neiva and sent her a poem as a suggestion. His works include tales, short stories, essays and poems. His love of fishing led to the series On Silver Pond and Fisher Tales.

He chronicled the family's many trips in the series Travel Stories, some of them published on Zero Hora Journal. In 2005, he published his first book Pieces of Time. His work earned literary awards in Brazil and South America.

Recognition

The writer was nominated and awarded Remarkable Personality in Literature, Trophy Pedro Aleixo 2012. The honors received awarded artists and other professionals in the Brazilian scene by the whole literary work (Trophy Pedro Aleixo), cultural contributions (Trophy Cecília Meireles), social and scientific (Trophy Carlos Chagas).
