Alastair Smales was born in 1962, has represented Australia in three consecutive Paralympics in swimming, was a world record holder and ranked 1 in his classification.

He lost the use of his legs in 1992 when a four-wheel drive he was fixing slipped off a jack and fell on him and is now classified has having an S6 (wheelchair) grade in competition. He has been a member of the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association and has trained at the Redcliffe Leagues Lawnton Club.

  • 1996 Competed in the Atlanta Paralympics - 50 metres butterfly
  • 1999 Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association State Championships - set world mark for 100 metres butterfly
  • 2000 Competed in the Sydney Paralympics
  • 2004 Competed in the Athens Paralympics - 5th in the 50m butterfly, 13th in the 50m freestyle, 14th in the 100m freestyle

    Smales currently lives in Redcliffe, Queensland with his wife Wanda, and works as an air traffic controller. They have two children.
