He was active as a professional in England, Denmark, Belgium and Wales, Kennedy made over 500 appearances in a career that lasted for 22 years. Career

Born in Sunderland, Kennedy played club football in England, Denmark, Belgium and Wales for Newcastle United, Liverpool, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, Hartlepool United, B 1903, Beerschot, Northwich Victoria, Wrexham, Colne Dynamoes, Morecambe, Netherfield, Radcliffe Borough and Barrow.

Kennedy became the first player to score winning goals in two European Cup finals with goals in the 1981 and 1984 finals.
He also earned two caps for the England national team in 1984.
