Club career

Riesen started his senior ice hockey career by linking up with hometown side the Canberra Knights of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) for the 2009 season. Alain made seventeen appearances for the Knights in his debut rookie season, scoring one point from one assist while spending twenty two minutes in the penalty box. Riesen quickly established himself as a prominent and permanent member of the Knights squad, playing twenty plus games a season and consistently scoring points for the team for a further four season in row until 2014.

26 September 2012, between AIHL seasons Riesen made the move to Switzerland and signed for EHC St. Moritz in the Swiss 2. Liga for the 2012/2013 season. Alain made seventeen appearances for St. Moritz, scoring two goals and getting one assist, in the regular season before participating in his first playoffs campaign of his senior career when Alain hit the ice in five playoff games, contributing two assists.

Before the start of the 2014 AIHL season the Knights folded operations and were replaced in the league by the CBR Brave. The Brave signed Riesen along with many of the former Knights players for the 2014 season. Riesen was given the number 32 jersey for the CBR Brave and was un-sponsored in 2014.

12 April 2014, Riesen made his debut for the Brave in the opening match of the 2014 AIHL season when the Brave took on the Newcastle North Stars at a sold out Phillip Ice Skating Centre in Canberra. The Brave lost the match 0-2 with the goals coming in the first and third periods by Jayson Chalker and Tim Stanger.

Alain missed the bulk of the season as the Brave went on a fairy-tale start to life in the AIHL, finishing third in the league and qualifying for the AIHL Finals weekend, the first time a Canberra men’s hockey team had achieved this feat in the AIHL era. Riesen joined the CBR Brave squad in travelling down to Melbourne to the Medibank Icehouse for the Finals weekend and a chance to contend for the Goodall Cup, the first time a Canberra-based team has had a chance to lift the cup since 1998. Alain took to the ice in the semi-final match between the CBR Brave and Melbourne Ice with the Brave going down 1-6 in their inaugural Finals experience, ending their season in the process.

14 April 2015, Riesen re-signed with the CBR Brave for the 2015 AIHL season, along with Dave Lewis, after missing the bulk of the previous season.
